Wonder Woman's Story
Thousands of years ago, the goddesses on Mt. Olympus created the Amazons to bring their wisdom
to humanity. Formed out of clay by her mother, Queen Hippolyta, Diana of Themyscira was given
life and great powers by the same Olympian gods. Following tradition on the Amazon island,
Diana was raised as a warrior, but she always had a desire to explore peaceful options to
resolve conflicts. Created to be an example and inspiration to "man's world" outside Themyscira,
the Amazons instead failed the gods in their duties and were consigned to immortal guardianship
of the gateway to the realm of Tartarus. When events (and gods) conspired so that one of the
Amazons had to be sent to man's world as an ambassador, Diana daughter of Queen Hippolyte was
chosen by contest, unbeknownst to Hippolyta who had origianlly forbad Diana from competing for
the ambasadorship.
Carrying a lasso fashioned from one of the girdles of Gaea and a star-spangled costume she
arrived in the modern world and was quickly christened Wonder Woman by the media. While she
still helped during the Darkseid inspired riots and is now a founding member of the modern
JLA she is at heart more of a teacher and a harbinger of peace.
She is normally armed with the Golden Lasso of Truth, which forces anybody snared by it to
tell the truth it could also life mind control effects from people. She can use the Sandals
of Hermes to pierce the veil of distortion that separated Paradise Island from the normal
world. Centuries before Princess Diana was created out of clay, when it was still an age of
myth and the demi-god Herakles bidden by Hera on his twelve labours found himself compelled
to obtain one of the girdles of the Amazons. Goaded by the agents of Ares he battled
Hippolyte and was defeated. The Amazons welcomed Herakles and his men into their city in
good faith but Herakles, hoping to rule over the Amazons, drugged Hippolyte. While he made his
way to Troy his men enslaved the Amazons. Hippolyte was freed by the Goddess Athena and
led her people in an uprising against the army of Herakles. Like all Amazons, WOnder Woman
wears her bracelets, voluntarily, as a symbol and a reminder of their bondage and imprisonment
by Herakles and his army. It is a constant reminder to the Amazons that they will never allow
themselves to be ruled by men again.
As Wonder Woman, Diana is a full fledged ambassador from the island of Themyscira to
Patriarch's World, teaching a message of peace and equality by her own example. She is an active
presence among the United Nations. Wonder Woman is truly the most fleshed out superhero around.
No other hero has the history or depth as Wonder Woman.
"Wonder Woman was created, at the request od DC Comics, by psychologist William Moulton
Marston who invested within her, his whole iconic creation.
Marston's comics career focused exclusively on Wonder Woman and no other writer ever
recaptured Marston's rather peculiar vision or successfully reimagined the series to the
degree that Marston has. Marston was a fascinating character. He loved two women, had two
children with each of them; all seven lived as one big, happy family. He was also the inventor of
the lie detector. Marston, despite (or because of?) his fantasies of a world ruled by dominating
women, obviously enjoyed binding women -- and the thought of women binding each other."
