Superhero Picture of the day 12.31.08 – Watchmen Minutemen

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

As we are all waiting in anticipation for the Watchmen Movie,  I thought I’d add this image that came out last year of the Minutemen, the first superhero group organized in 1939. From left to right we have Silhouette, Mothman, Dollar Bill, the original Nite Owl, Captain Metropolis in the back, The Comedian kneeling up front, Silk Spectre and Hooded Justice.

Even notice the Silk Spectre is holding Hooded Justice’s arm. The only thing I don’t see is the crescent moon belt buckle on the Nite Owl, but that might just be the pic itself.

I don’t know… maybe it’s me, but I just can’t take a superhero, who wears shorts, seriously. That is, unless it’s Robin, he’s cool. But.. the original Nite Owl falls into the “hetero but accidentally gayer than gay,” kind of like when Riley Freeman, Huey’s little gangsta brother on the Boondocks, ends up being ax’dently gay after worshipping his rappa’ artist Gangstalicious. Poor little Riley ended up wearing a skirt, halter top and carrying a purse. Funnier than hell.

  • Nite Owl – Hollis Mason, wrote Behind The Hood. Now runs an auto repair shop.
  • Silk Spectre – Sally Juspeczyk (Jupiter) “bloated aging whore, dying in a Californian rest resort.”
  • Captain Metropolis – Nelson Gardner,  “Decapitated in a car crash back in ’74.”
  • Mothman – Byron Lewis,  in an asylum up in Maine.
  • The Silhouette – retired in disgrace, murdered six weeks later by a minor adversary seeking revenge.”
  • Dollar Bill – “got shot”
  • Hooded Justice – “went missing in ’55.”

Watchmen Lawsuit (or, how idiots ruin everything)

Watchmen Movie Lawsuit

Here’s the deal, as far as I understand it. The Watchmen comic is owned by DC, which is really WB Warner Bros. But, some time ago 20th Century Fox had the rights to the movie and GOD ONLY KNOWS WHY WB didn’t figure this crap out when they started making the movie but apparently, the superhero flick is really owned by 20th Century Fox, according to Variety.

So, a federal judge ruled on Christmas Eve that Fox actually owns the distribution rights to Alan Moore’s graphic novel, and these rights extend to the big motion picture that’s to be released in March of ’09.

Fox filed the law suit in February ’08, stating that they retain the distribution rights to the Watchmen graphic novel and that the producer Lawrence Gordon’s option to acquire the studio’s remaining interest in “Watchmen” was never exercised which means that Fox still has the rights under the 1994 agreement.

20th Century Fox originally grabbed the rights to the “Watchmen” movie in the late 1980s and spent more than $1 million developing the damn project, which later went to Universal and then Paramount before landing at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Jesus, what a bunch of looers. Kinda like a duck-duck-goose, isn’t it? They have the rights and sit on it and nothing happens. Fools.

So far, the federal judge’s ruling has not stopped WB from releasing the Watchment movie on March 6. Stay tuned and we’ll let you know what the deal is as we hear it.

Here’s the lowdown

Pic of the day 12.30.08 – Yvonne Craig / Batgirl

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

I just learned something today! Did you know, that the incredibly hot Yvonne Craig, who plaid Batgirl in the 1960s Batman tv series, is also the green Orion slave girl “Marta” in the Star Trek original series episode “Whom Gods Destroy?” Awesome.

Yvonne Craig as batgirl

Not only is her Batgirl performance perfect but she did a stellar job as Marta the slave girl. God, she’s such a fox!. You can read up on Yvonne here. We’ll be collecting a plethora of pics of her some time soon.

Wonder Woman Rolling Stone

So, I stumbled upon this fantastic piece of artwork the other day and blew my wad. What an awesome piece of work. There are so many things happening here that they override the fact the her rib cage looks like a zombie’s torso. (yuck! Don’t look!) (I told you not to look!) So, here are the cool happening things in this piece of artwork. Â

Her boobies. I can’t help it. They are glorious, yes yes they are fake, I don’t care. Guys don’t care!! We love big fake tits! We’re pigs and dogs, what can I say. But women are the one’s who continue to buy and wear them, we’re just the Pavlovian dog that admires and even worships them.  The jeans. My god what an abundance of sex in art. A (sexy) woman with unzipped, torn jeans is something powerful enough to stop (or start) a war. To see a woman’s flesh through her shredded garments, to be luxuriously teased and tormented with provocative thoughts of her skin hiding behind whimsical tattered and torn threads is completely intoxicating. And the artist knew it!Â

The French Cut undies. My god, a woman’s exposed hips is among the most powerful things in the universe, next to their cleavage, and only a few of them know it much less know how to wield such an implement of power. Her little red star tattoo on her cannonball of a breast. Â

The arm bands are artistic interpretation. Wonder Woman doesn’t wear armbands. I’m a traditionalist… but I like it. He did a good job here. The silver bracers on her forearms, again a deviation from tradition with the stars and gold rings… but it works here. I like it. Just don’t make a habit of it.Â

The hair and those librarian glasses. God I love the librarian look. That look as you walk up to the counter and she has her nose, neck deep, in a book of ancient writings of the Sistine Chapel (or anything as equally cerebral) where she oozes a sense of literacy and candidness while attempting to hide her desire for some guy to come and show her what it’s really like to experience the Reverse Cowgirl… something she’s been reading about all these years. Who’s up for the challenge? Gotta love the librarian look.  And in the background you have the battleship hull and painted DC graphic all reminiscent of a WW II military air(sea)craft that’s seen some action.Â

I love this image!

You can find the original artwork here.

Pic of the day 12.26.08 – Watchmen Smiley Face

Friday, December 26th, 2008

This is an awesome image that I found on the LoveHateThings.com blog. The Watchmen movie comes out March 9th, 2009. In the book, and hopefully in the movie, you’ll notice some reoccurring themes.

  • The smiley face: which used to belong to the Comedian. In the beginning, you find that that’s his blood on the face, in the end… it’s burger sauce.
  • The clock. Each scene/comic (tweleve in all) is opened with the image of a clock face ticking closer to noon.
  • Gunga Diner wrappers. The place is constantly seen in the background, as well as it’s wrappers seen in the streets adrift in the wind and garbage.
  • Pale Horse
  • Veidt corporate logos, either perfume, tennis shoes or pretty much anything. Adrian’s name is as pervasive and ubiquitous as Nike.
  • And the Gordion Knot Lock Company, not seen here.

You absolutely HAVE to read the book. It is a masterpiece.

Catwoman, Eartha Kitt, Passes Away On Christmas

Friday, December 26th, 2008

If you are any fan of the Adam West Batman tv show back in the 70s, then you’ll be saddened to hear that one of the three beloved actors who played Catwoman, Ms. Eartha Kitt, has passed away. She died from colon cancer at the age of 81.

Catwoman Eartha Kitt dies

Eartha was born in 1926 on a South Carolina cotton plantation.  Her mother was part Cherokee and African-American, her father Germa and Dutch descent, who’s surname was Kitt who’s father was the owner of the plantation Eartha was born on. From an early age she was ostracized because of her mixed-race heritage. At 8 years old, Earth was given away by her mother to go live with her aunt Anna Mae Riley in Harlem.Â

After her Riley’s death, she was sent to live in New York City with her biological mother Mamie Kitt. As a teen ager in New York, Eartha auditioned for the Katherine Dunham Dance Troupe. By age 19 she eventually won a spot as a featured dancer and vocalist and toured worldwide with the company. While touring in Paris, she was spotted by a nightclub owner and booked as a featured singer at his club.Â

Welles gave Eartha her first starring role as Helen of Troy in Dr. Faustus. Welles and Eartha had a torrid affair where Welles nicnamed her “the most exciting woman in the world.”  She eventually landed Charles Revson, as another lover, who was the founder of the Revlon cosmetic company, who custom made a flaming red lipstick, for Eartha, that was called Fire and Ice.Eartha’s famous cat-like purr and unique persona earned her fans and fame quickly. Â

She sang many hit songs, including the 1953 Christmas song. She became well known in Britain when she scored a Top 40 hit in 1980 with the disco classic ‘Where Is My Man?’ that found her new audiences in nightclubs. It was in the Batman series in the 1960s that Eartha became a household name after Julie Newmar left the show. Unfortuntely it was during a White House luncheon with the Johnsons that she made some anti-war statements that upset the First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson. That incident put a hold on her career.

She made a comeback in the 1970s by doing New York’s Broadway, and later appeared regularly in theatre shows and concert halls. One of her more unusual roles was as Kaa the python in a 1994 BBC Radio adaptation of The Jungle Book. Eartha was born to a 14-year-old girl who was raped on a cotton plantation and was handed over to another family before being sent to live with an aunt in New York.
