Heath Ledger Wins Oscar - Best Supporting Actor

Heath Ledger wins Best Supporting Actor

Heath Ledger Wins Best Supporting Actor For Dark Knight

The late Heath Ledger won the long-anticipated Best Supporting Actor for “The Dark Knight” for his dementedly twisted reinvention of the Joker.

He is the second performer to ever be honored with a posthumous Oscar. (The previous posthumous Oscar recipient was Peter Finch, who won best actor for 1976’s “Network.”)

Ledger’s father, Kim; sister Kate and mother, Sally Bell, accepted his statuette on behalf of his 3-year-old daughter, Matilda.. The entire house was choked up with sobs and tears being that it was a pretty emotional moment. The recognition came exactly 13 months after his death from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs on Oscar nominations day, Jan. 22, 2008.

“I have to say this is ever so humbling, just being amongst such wonderful people in such a wonderful industry,” said his father, Kim Ledger. “We’d like to thank the academy for recognizing our son’s amazing work, Warner Bros., and Christopher Nolan in particular for allowing Heath the creative license to develop and explore this crazy Joker character.”

“Heath was such a compassionate and generous soul who added excitement and inspiration to our lives,” said his mother Sally Bell. “We choose to be happy tonight for what he has achieved.”

Kate Ledger, Heath’s sister, closed the family’s comments, invoking Ledger and actress Michelle Williams’ 3-year-old daughter. “Heath, we wish you were here - we proudly accept this award on behalf of your beautiful Matilda.”

Since Ledger’s death at 28, he managed to gain a mythical aura akin to James Dean, another rising star who also died at the young age of 24 in 1955, who was also the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and remains the only person to have two posthumous acting nominations in the same category.

The Joker was Ledger’s final completed role. The casting choice initially drew scorn and bile from geek-comic fans across the globe who thought Ledger would not be able to cut the mustard as the Joker, since everyone was still worshiping Jack Nicholson’s campy rendition of the character in 1989’s “Batman.” I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… Nicholson did NOT do a stellar performance as the Joker. Heath did!

In the months before Ledger’s unfortunate death, buzz on the street about his wickedly psychotic performance swelled as marketing and merchandising for the movie centered on the Joker and Heath’s chaotic, and messy, clown makeup.

Ledger’s death fanned a frenzy of anticipation for “The Dark Knight,” among comic geeks, and normal people alike, which had a record $158.4 million opening weekend last summer.

Here is a list of all the other people who were recognized at the 81st Academy Awards.

Luke Cage Movie - 2011

Luke Cage - Classic Comic Look, with Fro!

Luke Cage - Classic Comic Look, with Fro!

A young black, Harlem, street-punk, gang member (Of course. At the time, Marvel wouldn’t have it any other way) named “Lucas” who was ended up serving time in the big house for heroin that was obviously planted in his apartment by a rival gang member.

While in Seagate Prison, research scientist for the government, Dr. Noah Burstein recruits Lucas as a “volunteer” for an experimental cell regeneration experiment, which just so happens to be based on a variant of the Super-Soldier serum Burstein had previously helped to create.

Volunteering for the experiment was done in exchange for an early parole for Lucas. If you know your history, you can see the irony here since the government has been known to do THE EXACT OPPOSITE to the American black man where they actually injected them with syphilis to see what would happen.

Jesus, our loving government working hard to support the disenfranchised, and people wonder why the black man hates Whitey so damn much. I would too with that kind of loving government support.

Well, the experiment didn’t go as planned, since it was sabotaged by a security guard hoping to kill young Lucas. Instead of finding a cure to any illnesses, it accidentally, oops, granted a streetwise felon titanium-hard skin and mega-heavier, enhanced muscle mass.

The New Luke Cage In The New Avengers

The New Luke Cage In The New Avengers

Lucas uses his new found power to escape Seagate Prison and makes his way back to Harlem, where a chance encounter with criminals inspires him to use his new powers for profit. Hey, if you’re going to do the right thing and help people, you might as well get paid for it, right?

Lucas created the identity of “Luke Cage – Hero For Hire,” a superhero private dick. Cage eventually formed a business partnership with Iron Fist. Through the groundbreaking series Power Man & Iron Fist, the two became one of the better-known superhero duos of the 1970s.

To practice brevity here, Marvel creates the New Avengers, dusts off the yellow silk top and looses the chain and wrist bracers, and tiara, and shaves the fro off Cage’s head and gives him a whole new look.

Behold, the New Avenger Luke cage. Tyrese Gibson is supposed to be playing Cage in the Luke Cage movie which is to hit the screens in 2011. Tyrese is a famous rapper, actor, model, and MTV VJ.

Maybe you remember seeing him as one of the bad ass soldiers in Transformers. We can’t wait to see this movie! Now if only we had some Luke Cage merchandise and t-shirts to shlep!

Terminator Meets Family Guy

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Ok, I originally didn’t want to post Christian Bale’s (Dark Knight, Sean Conner/Terminator) rant from 2008, since Bale was acting like a stereotypical, petulant, psychotic, spoiled, rich, Hollywood actor…  but I couldn’t pass this up. Just too damn funny.
