Yeah, I like comics. You do to, I reckon. Yeah, they’re cool and so forth and some such. I mean, I read ‘em. I used to read more, but I couldn’t keep up with the 40+ titles I was getting. Let’s just say there were too many windows through which to view the adventures of too many characters. Confusion took hold as continuities…melded. So……I cut down the list a bit and stuck with the heroes/premises that DEMANDED I continue following along with the latest story-arc/ character-defining moment/ (infuriating) ret-con. Who made the cut? Which characters/premises were able to dig their fictional, barbed tendrils deeply enough into my psyche as to be permanently housed in my unusually vivid, bullet-train cognizance!!?
If you’re not bored to fiery tears….drop your eyes a tad, gentle reader.
Iron Man- Honestly, this is the first superhero I ever truly cared about…and that was before I knew he was a lady-killing, narcissistic alcoholic . Oh, and he was really smart. I just LOVED the armor! Loved it! When I finally started collecting titles on a regular basis, Iron Man was the first. During this particular period of his career, he was sheathed with the Silver Centurian Armor. My FAVORITE ARMOR! This is the armor that signaled his rebirth after losing his company ( and dignity) to the vile machinations of one Obadiah Stane. This is the armor that took him through the classic ” Armor War” story-arc. Remember this one? He discovered that Stark Technology was responsible for many of the the techno-themed malcontents populating the Marvel Universe. Stark, discovering that his patented tech was pilfered and distributed, waged a one man war on those utilizing his patented synth-wear! There was a lot of ass kicking; some of it directed towards a friendly or two! At one point, he actually “twanged” an amorally armored adversary out of a cargo plane. Priceless.
In the current thread written by Matt Fraction, the ego and the eccentricity is back, baby. Tony’s got an armor that POURS OUT OF HIS @#$%ING BODY! Finally, the dream of conjoining man with machine for mutual evolutionary purposes has been made manifest! Long live the Iron Man!
Who else? How about…..Thor! Straczynski did a fair job of enlivening the mythos. Kierron Gillen had an extremely well written arc or 2 and now we have Matt Fraction taking us on a tour of the World freakin’ Tree! Thor is like 2 parts fantasy with 1 part science fiction. Warren Ellis once postulated that Thor and his other godly brethren weren’t gods at all; they could actually be an incredibly advanced race of “alien” beings whose science is so far evolved as to appear very much like magic. Cool stuff, m’man. Speaking of the World Tree, how are you liking the latest story arc? Since Asgard is on Earth….just who/ what is taking up residence in Asgard? Another question: Who needs the space? An angry, red-colored, dimension-hopping race of war mongers, that’s who! Oh, yeah.
Who else? The Flash, baby. Yeah, I’m peeved about Wally warming the bench, the sizable inconsistencies with Flash:Rebirth and, quite frankly, Barry’s ability to lull one into a coma…but it’s still interesting enough to warrant a loyal purchasing trend! Really! I mean, Barry is RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SPEED FORCE! Really! This was an interesting Flash: Rebirth reveal. Not sure if I like it….but I just…I just have to know what happens. And, I need to see just what the hell all this forthcoming “Flash Point” business is all about. Maybe…maybe it leads to Wally reclaiming the reclaimed mantle of the Flash!!??? One can dream, can’t one?
Join me next week as I mention a few more of the heroes who wriggled the hell off the chopping block at the last minute and, possibly….those who didn’t.
Listen. Those are bagpipes you’re hearing. They’re being played in memorium for the fictional exploits of adored characters that I just had to leave behind. Now…keep listening. The melody…. It’s bending towards something more…uplifting. Could it be that ….what was once disregarded is now….back on my pull list!!??? I…I…I just can’t quit you.
