Before he was Grendel he was Hunter Rose. Before that, he was just Eddie, a young guy who excelled at everything, including fencing. He took up the name Hunter Rose, and became a best-selling author and soon created the identity of Grendel, a costumed assassin hired by local mobs and eventually died at the hands of Argent, a Native American man-wolf cop. The Grendel identity would go on to pass through Rose’s family for generations, evolving over hundreds of years to become the embodiment of evil.
