A little history on the Transformers.
Transformers: Generation One (G1) is a retroactive term that the Geeks of today used for the Transformer characters that
appeared between 1984 and 1992. The Transformers began with the 1970s Japanese toy lines Microman, Diaclone, and Diacron.
Microman, utilized humanoid-like action figures while Diaclone depicted their robots able to transform into
different types of vehicules. The Diacrom robots mimicked everyday electronic appliances or replica weapons.
Hasbro, after scoring a huge success with their G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toyline, utilised the Microman
technology to great success. Hasbro eventually bought the Diaclone toys, and partnered with Takara.
The primary concept of Generation One is that the heroic Optimus Prime, the villainous Megatron,
and their soldiers crash land on pre-historic Earth. Marvel interpreted the Autobots as destroying a rogue asteroid
approaching Cybertron.
The Transformers TV series began around the same time but it contradicted the original storyline. The TV series shows
the Autobots looking for a new energy source, and crash landing on Earth at the same time the Decepticons attack.
In the TV series, Shockwave, a Transformer, is loyal to Megatron but in the comic book he attempts to take command of the
Decepticons.
In 1986, The Transformers: The Movie hit the screens, is set in the way distant future... 2005. The movie introduced
the Matrix as the "Autobot Matrix of Leadership", as a fatally wounded Prime gives it to Ultra Magnus.
Unicron, a transformer who devours planets (not unlike Galactus), fears its power and recreates a dying Megatron as
Galvatron. Eventually, Rodimus Prime takes up the Matrix and destroys Unicron... are you catching all of Geek-dom?
.. blah blah blah,... and then the live action movie came out on Independence Day 2007 and the world was happy!
