WAR MACHINE

In the comics, James Rupert Rhodes was a wounded American Marine helicopter pilot in Vietnam where he met Iron Man, Tony Stark's bodyguard, after Iron Man killed Vietnamese Communist bad guy Wong-Chu. Together, Iron Man and Rhodes defend themselves against Wong-Chu's pursuing North Vietnamese soldiers while making it back to Rhodes' helicopter.

After recharging Iron Man's armor from the downed helicopter, they head back towards friendly territory but stumble upon a secret enemy rocket base, which they then blow up and steal a helicopter back to an American base. Stark then hires Rhodes as a pilot after Rhodes' stint in the military. In the movie Rhodes is Stark's Air Force liaison.

Rhodes is initially a supporting character who's role involved facilitating arms deals for the government from Stark Industries, getting drunk with Tony Stark and sleeping with stewardesses at 50,000 feet. In the comic universe Iron Man issue #170 (May 1983), Rhodes picks up the red and gold mantle of Iron Man after Tony Stark relapses into alcoholism (after the whole Stane thing) and continues to as a secondary fill in for Iron Man.

Tony has trouble with the Armor's cybernetic interface wrecking havoc with his nervous system. On top of that some psycho, hose beast, nut job ex of his shoots him, paralyzing him. He tries to fly the suit remote control style, but it fails. He then designs a tougher, heavily-armed version of the suit to wear, the "Variable Threat Response Battle Suit", known as the War Machine armor, but his nervous system is completely shot so he fakes his death, enters suspended animation to heal as Rhodes takes over Stark Enterprises and the War Machine armor, Iron Man issue #284 (September 1992).

Whiplash

The big thing we thought was weird is that they combined 2 characters from the comic books to create the Whiplash (played by Mickey Rourke) we see in the movie. It looks like they used the guy who was like a Russian Iron Man, the Crimson Dynamo, and one of the actual Whiplash characters from the comic as well to create the movie version.

In the comic, Whiplash's real name was Mark Scarlotti but in the movie, his name is Ivan Vanko which is the name of one of the Crimson Dynamo's. But, not the Crimson Dynamo from the comics, he's the Crimson Dynamo from one of the animated tv shows (there were several Crimson Dynamo's), so go figure.. and no, we're not explaining it to you again 'cause we don't even understand it. we think they didn't just want some dope with laser whips or whatever the hell those things are but wanted a smart scientist/inventor but it's still odd as hell.

Still, the Whiplash from the comic is pretty damn lame, so when we heard that was a villain in the new flick we nearly threw up. The comic book whiplash wears a freaking tassel on his head! (But note, in the trailer, when Rourke is getting out of the van to meet Justin Hammer in the hanger, you see his hair pulled up all funky weird.)

Thankfully, it looks like he’ll only be throwing whips around briefly in the film, then doing more of the fringe technology stuff later under Justin Hammer, one of

Stark’s more “aggressive” business competitors from the comic. In an Iron Man story titled, “The Armor Wars,“ Justin Hammer had actually gotten a hold of Stark technology through a costumed spy by the name of (get this....) the Spymaster. Hammer then sold the technology, or offered it, to... bad people. Big meanies!

Stark discovered that this stolen Stark tech was the source technology for a lot of armored and technology based super villains roaming around the countryside, doing their usual bad guy thing blowing stuff up. So, Stark, feeling responsible for the harm done to innocents by those using this pilfered technology, basically went out and kicked the sh!t out of a great deal of armored and tech based baddies, neutralizing the patented stark technology and so forth and such and such.

Briefcase Armor

In the comics, Iron Man had the red and gold armor, that broke down and collapsed and was stored in a briefcase that was handcuffed to Tony's wrist and was carried everywhere he went, but in the movie, he uses machines to put the armor on and take it off.

The briefcase armor appears to be a special, more portable type of armor (note the silver and red vs gold and red) for when people with electric whips show up and slap your race car around. The briefcase armor first made its debut in 1963 in "Tales of Suspense."

Since then Tony's briefcase armor has long been a part of his arsenal of high-tech weaponry. What was also an integral part of the story was that Tony had to wear his chest piece all the time, and had to plug into a wall socket every now and then

like a hybrid euro car. In the comics, the briefcase has a number of safety features used to keep honest people honest as well as bad guys making off with his armor.

It analyzes fingerprints, allowing only those authorized to gain entry. Knockout gas is used when unauthorized fingerprints are used to attempt entry. If forced entry is attempted, the briefcase will self-destruct, taking out the armor as well as the poor slob trying to get a free lunch.

And don't forget the secret handcuffs used to keep the briefcase always by Tony's side. Aside from housing the most sophisticated piece of weaponry in the world, the briefcase acts as a USB flash drive where it can download data from near by computers. Tony did this to hack into a SHIELD Helicarrier computer... as was promptly thrown overboard by rogue SHIELD agents.
